Description
The listing, RARE!!!! "1868" Match Safe Produced by the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company has ended.
Match safe consists of a shield shaped back plate with two attached baskets each decorated with a foliated garland and gadrooning. The area between the baskets has a rough texture for striking the match. A loop is formed at the top by two scrolls for hanging. Marked on back: PAT'D JAN. 28, 1868, item number 1800, and bears a maker's oval mark. The patent document relates to the method of attaching the metal parts together using a tab and slot. it is Cast Iron with a copper color coat...very neat item. Back in the day it was kinda used like a lite switch is used today. It was mounted on a wall with matches in it to light candles, lanterns, stoves, ect.
This is a very lovely and 'interesting' little object. Just the kind of attraction that will cause antique aficionados to increase the value with their bidding. It probably originally sold for a mere .50 to $1, but it is the unique and very attractive nature of this little object that gives it it's value. Not to mention the fact that it is in such pristine condition, and includes patent information to boot. If I had this, I don't think I'd be able to surrender it at ANY price. I'll be watching, and although I have a couple of auctions ending soon, and a large credit refund coming shortly, I doubt that I will have enough credits to compete for this 'sweet' object when the time comes. I'll be watching for the sheer pleasure of watching it skyrocket, which I have every confidence it will do! Brava, on having the good fortune of finding this, and for having the generosity to 'let it go'!
Hubby said I was crazy for putting it on Listia....But I knew it would bring good point value and great enjoyment to a fellow Listiaen. I know I enjoy a good find on here as well.
I just found this very match safe onshowcaseantiques .com, for sale at the price of $250.00 . I would put a direct link here, but outside links are not permitted.
It has more value than anything you ave found on the internet. The pictures I used are of better quality....whom ever wins this win be one very happy person
