Questions & Comments
Did not finish. Had to go eat dinner. Anyway stamphound is right. Sometimes coins are so encrusted there just dirty pieces of metal. Its nice to be able to identify them. And there are ways to clean them that will preserve the patina. Or restore it if one gets carried away by brushing too hard. It is hit and miss I guess. Sometimes you gotta take your chances! Thanks for the comments!
It is a great hobby if you are going to keep the coins because you like them. However, cleaning the patina off of any collectible makes it less valuable. The more you know the more you can educate your prospective clientele. :D F&W
JeT, you are right, cleaning a coin will generally drop the value of the coin. However, with ancient coins, they are often so encrusted with dirt that they need cleaning if only to be able to identify them. It's worth more if you can attribute it. Of course, if you scrape right down to the bare metal, again it loses value.
Hello all. And thank you to all the critques out there! I did neglect to inform bidders of the pros and cons of cleaning them. The instructions I will send addresses these issues.
