In 1878, 1879 and 1880 the US Mint produced experimental test coins like this, that were never meant for general circulation. When a few of these ended up in private collections other hard core collectors wanted them. These restrikes/copies were made to help those early collectors fill their collections.

If you were ever able to find one of those original test coins it would likely cost many tens of thousands of dollars. This coin is a far less expensive way to complete your collection.

Even though these coin are restrikes or copies, they are also quite difficult to come by. The 1878 version is easier to find and even these sell for up to $200. I doubt you will find this 1879 coin anywhere else for any price.
