In the Second World War, because the copper became expensive, American pennies minted its 1943 steel, which is a much cheaper material. The result of the coinage was a disaster to be the silver colored steel, people confused them with dimes, which cost 10 cents; vending machines did not recognize; and as they were not galvanized edges rusted and corroded if any soon coined. All this made the following year to encase the steel blanks with a thin layer of copper to avoid such evils. In any case, from 1947 cents again be copper and steel allowed for other purposes.
