Sculptured heads on Mt. Rushmore
The heads of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt comprise the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The memorial is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The four presidents were chosen to represent, respectively, the nation's founding, philosophy, unity, and expansion. Funded primarily by the federal government, the memorial was designed and supervised during construction by Gutzon Borglum between 1927-1941.
