La Fortaleza, San Juan
San Juan is Puerto Rico's capital, leading port, and manufacturing center. Buildings in the city date back to the early 16th century. San Jose Church was built in 1532; La Fortaleza, the governor's palace, was begun in 1533. Historic Old San Juan, with its narrow streets and colonial buildings, is in the harbor on an island that is connected to the remainder of the city by bridges and a causeway. San Juan draws more tourists annually than any other spot in the Caribbean. Juan Ponce de Leon founded the first settlement in 1508. In 1521 the town was relocated to the present Old San Juan. The city passed to the control of the United States in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
