*These were probably cards that they used at the card tables in the casino. There is a hole punched in each card so they can't be used in the casino again.

The modern playing cards were invented in France in 1480. The clubs represent peasantry. The hearts represent the clergy. The diamonds, the merchants. The spades represent the nobility.

The French named the Kings, Queens and Jacks (Knaves). The king of spades is King David. The queen of spades is the goddess Pallas. The jack of spades Ogier the Dane.

The king of hearts is Charlemagne, the queen of hearts is Judith (when Princess Diana died in 1997, lots of Queen of Hearts playing cards where left as a memorial). The jack of hearts is La Hire who fought along side St. Joan of Arc.

The king of clubs is Alexander the Great, the queen of clubs is Argea or Argina (an anagram of Regina which means queen in Latin), the jack of clubs is either Lancelot or Judah Maccabee.

The king of diamonds is Julius Caesar. the queen of diamonds is Rachel (Old Testament), the jack is Hector (of Trojan War fame).

The deadman's hand is the ace of clubs and spades and the eight of clubs and spades (two pair) and a blank. Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead by Jack McCall. This was the five card poker hand Hickok held when he was shot.
