Description

The listing, Commemorative Coin Package; Canada; 2 dollar (Toonie); 1996; + BONUS has ended.

Thank you for browsing.

On February 16, 1996 an era ended in Canada when production of the two dollar bank note ceased; but a new era began only 3 days later, on February 19th, with the introduction of Canada’s newest circulation piece - the two dollar coin; affectionately known to Canadians as the “Toonie”, eh(?).

The winner of this auction will receive one (1) brand new (still in original mint shrink wrap) Canadian 1996 - the first year of issue - two dollar (toonie) coin commemorative package with uncirculated coin. The obverse features (surprise, surprise) Queen Elizabeth II (yawn) and the reverse, the iconically Canadian polar bear. The reverse was designed by artist Brent Townsend from Campbellford, Ontario - that’s less than 250 km from where I live...Ontario, represent! ;-)

This bi-metallic coin has an aluminum-bronze centre and nickel outer ring; diameter: 28.0 mm; weight: 7.3 grams and the mintage was 375,000,000.

BONUS - As an added bonus - because there’s nothing better than twice as much (of anything) - the winner of this auction will also receive one (1) Canadian two dollar banknote (dated 1986, the last dated issue) in uncirculated condition. And, as a extra added bonus, the banknote will come, as shown in the photos, in a semi-rigid bill holder.

PLEASE NOTE - The winner will receive the commemorative package shown in the photographs. Coin easel NOT included.

Free shipping here, there and everywhere...well, at least, everywhere Canada Post ships to.

modern Canada Coins have interesting names, The Term toonie comes from the fact that they called the one dollar coin the Loonie because of the Loon. So you see you have Loonies and Toonies (Lunie Tunes) Anyway the dime is called a Blue Nose because of the schooner for some reason or another. One more thing before I go, if a canadian ask you if you want to see the queen's bare back what he is really talking about is a vulgar reference to the Toonie because it has the queen on the front and a bear on the back. I heard this from a expat Canadian so I am not sure how much he was pulling my leg. This Auction is going reall well and I am tempted to offer up mine as I am not a big note collector, but we will have to wait and see.

Thank you for browsing and commenting. :-) I hadn't heard the 'Queen's bare back' reference, but, then, there are many regional slangs across our vast 'Great White North'.

I also have one of these sets and I will be watching just to see what kind of interested you get on it. Maybe I will offer it up for those that miss out on this one if there is enough interest.
