Power down your mobile phone and remove the battery compartment door.

Remove the battery and locate the ESN number written on a label inside the battery compartment. Write down the ESN number. Reinsert the battery and the compartment door then power back on the phone.

Contact the wireless carrier that the cell phone was registered with. Usually the name of the wireless provider is etched into the front of the phone. However, if the device was unlocked, contact the wireless carrier that you want to activate the device with.

Follow the prompts to speak with a representative. Inform the representative of your intent to verify the ESN for a cell phone.

Provide the representative with the ESN number, when prompted to do so. Wait for her inform you whether or not the device has a clean ESN.

It only lets me update to iOS 7.1.2. However, I'm refraining from that since some do not like iOS 7. If the winner wants iOS 7, I will download it for them before I send it out!
