On a personal note, my mother in law was a 2-pack-a-day smoker for over 50 years and switched about a year ago to an e-cig when her doc told her she'd have to go on Oxygen. She threw away her last half-full pack of Marlboros and hasn't touched one since. AND, her lung function has improved enough that her doctors stopped her O2 supplementation, too. She says she feels better than she has in 10 years!
