Actually there is some gardening sights that say it is hardy to zone 5 ;). You could try growing them inside thru the winter and transplanting next spring. Apparently they are very hardy after their first year ;). And I haven't tried them yet, still getting my garden started myself, but they are also known as "chocolate berry" because their berries have a chocolate flavor when ripe. But it also says not to eat until very ripe because unripe berries are very hot! Lol

You're good then ;). They are very hardy once established. Cold, heat & drought tolerant once established. They have a bamboo like stalk so not good standing alone in extreme wind if you live in a hurricane zone. But they are deciduous, so even if a hard freeze kills them to the ground, they usually come back in the spring and grow to approximately 6' tall again. They like the sun but in hotter climates they do better with some shade. They are a shrub not vine so make a nice hedge or background shrub to place along a fence or building. Thx!
