The listing, 1979 D Steel/ Nickel Penny? has ended.
I have never seen this before. Silver in color. This penny is attracted to a magnet, does not completely stick but is definitely attracted to it. i have tried looking this up online. This coin is said to be a myth, yet here it is. I have no idea what it is worth. Oddity for the curious?
Does anyone know more about this? What it might be worth? If it might actually be steel/ nickel ? I did all the research i could and came up empty handed. I found this penny and was intrigued. I am not a collector. I have found a few interesting coins over the years that i have held on to, now is the time to send them on to someone that really wants them and knows something about them. Thank you all for watching, nice to watch those numbers climb.
I believe that it was plated with nickel/silver/platinum for some "collector" kits sold on the TV to unsuspecting fools. Nice novelty but really worthless... :-~
They have actually been coating pennies in silver and gold a lot lately. Just ran across a bunch of gold plated wheat pennies a while back. They are pretty neat.
it is a very cool coin and a nice collectible but i looked into it online and found that it most likely either nickel or chrome plated and going by the pics it would be chromed in my opinion and that would explain why it is atracted by a magnet but does not completly stick* and something like this would most likely be done out side the mint and would technically be a *damaged* coin and wouldnt be worth much.......sorry but it is definately cool
