Far from being the single culture labeled “Indian” by Europeans, Native Americans represented a multitude of highly developed cultures and spoke hundreds of different languages. Wherever they lived, Native Americans of North America developed lifestyles, worldviews, religions, traditions,and mythologies as varied as the environments they inhabited.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
The entries in this book are in alphabetical order and may be looked up as you would look up words in a dictionary. When the English name is used more commonly in myths than the Native American name, the main entry is the English translation; the Native American name is given in parentheses. Alternative names and spellings are also provided in parentheses following the main entry, as are English translations of Native American names. Because so many different Native American languages are represented in this guide—and because many languages have died out—no attempt has been made to include pronunciations of Native American names and terms.
