Up for auction is a key date to the Liberty Head Nickel series: 1886. Now here's the complicated part: Many years ago this coin had a good portion of its date showing (picture 1 and 2). Thinking it would bring back more detail acid was poured on the coin, which did reveal much more details. The coin was left in the acid too long and it started eating all detail away, including most of the date. Pictures 3, 4, and 5 are what the coin looks like today. Pictures 1 and 2 are the pictures of the same coin taken many years ago. To prove that pictures 1 and 2 are of the same coin as 3, 4, and 5 you can line up the scratch marks on the obverse to find that they are unquestionably the same.
