Any nicks in the stones (or art the dark parts plastic or what)?

Not sure what type of stone/jewel made of, but definitely not plastic. I do not see any chips. I wish I could get better pics but hard too because of the reflective nature and cut of the pieces.

The inside of the jewelry box they came in reads, "Kaufmann's Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh," which is where my uncle had lived and taught German at the University. Kaufmann's, founded in 1871, no longer exists. It was bought out by Macy's in 2006, but for a time it was the most prominent of seven other department stores in downtown Pittsburgh. Just a little history... ;) Thanks for your question!

How many pair total?

I believe the 2 larger pieces pictured are the set of cuff links. The 3 smaller pieces I believe are used in button holes. I will try to get a picture posted later of the backs. These were my uncle's and I myself am not too familiar with how these work. Hope that helps answer your question. Thanks! :)

That looks like no cuff luck closure I've ever seen, could you possibly put another picture with some detail about how they open/close?

I know these are very old, they were my uncle's, and being I don't use this type of thing I don't know how they are supposed to work. I can tell you that on the smaller pieces the bar on the back "springs" so I would assume you pull it back to put through the holes and then it springs back into place. But that is just my guess. Sorry cannot help you further than that.
