Questions & Comments
the lock is modern,as are the screws on the back, purses from that era were typically made of cloth.the design itself is 21st century.
I am very knowledgeable about antiquities from college, studying, and ability to identify items of interest to me through pictures. People used whatever was readily available and wooden luggage, purses, and traveling boxes were hand made with pride, to last, and out of necessity. By 1880's leather purses were new and in vogue. Not until the 20th century did c material and plastic items made by machines without much pride and care. Plus I'm smarter than the average bear Boo Boo!
neither vintage or antique, you can buy them at pier one and also family dollar stores.and it does matter very, very much.a purse from the 1800's is worth twenty times what the above one costs.iv'e been an antique dealer for 40 plus years.
Quality craftsmanship? Looks like it was made in China as what craftsman would use staples to hold the handle on and allow the exposed prongs to protrude through the top? I am no expert of antiques but I am an avid wood worker and can say absolutely this was poorly made and of cheap wood.
I don't know much about these things at all so appreciate those who do and comment. Even to me, those hinges definitely look modern bc I've seen various real antiques not nearly as old as 1840s and the style of hinges vary wildly from the ones shown here
