Chert (Oklahoma Flint) is the result of hundreds of thousands of years accumulation of fine particle high silica concentrate MUD, allowed to dry when the sea recedes. The lower part of these concretions are affected by the silica accumulating and creating a very hard, fine grain flint. Flint often contains the fossils of animals that settles down into the mud.Years of erosion by wind and water release the chert to the atmosphere. My source is from the bed of the Illinois River here in Sequoyah County where it occurs in small stones and larger boulders.
