N. American mesquite grows in agricultural zones 6b through 9. Considered to be an invasive species in some areas. Multiple trunks, wide spreading root system, prefers sandy soils. Wasn't sure it would grow in my area of the country, so I did some research.

"North American Mesquites

North American mesquites, famous for their rough, reddish-brown bark and spiny branches, grow up to 25 to 35 feet high with a matching spread. Evolved to grow in arid regions, their roots spread wide in search of water and can consume moisture needed by neighboring plants. Mesquites are legumes with roots that work with soil bacteria to convert nitrogen gas in the air to a form of nitrogen that they can use, hence they fertilize themselves. They have been grown as bonsai and in urban yards, but are not suitable for street trees because their multiple trunks."
