Another item from my extensive oriental collection which has been in storage for 20+ years.

This is a Chinese, hand painted egg. There is no hole in the bottom so I don't believe it is a real egg shell. It looks & feels like an egg shell but it has a slightly different sound when tapped. It may be a very thin plastic material. It is hollow like an egg shell. It has been shellacked before the painting was done, so maybe that could have covered the hole. Either way I am not going to state that it is a "real" egg shell. It comes with a black enameled stand. the egg is about 3" x 2:" & the stand is 1 1/4" in diameter at the bottom & about 3/4" high.

The painting is very brightly colored, and very detailed and intricate. I believe the writing on the back is the artist's signature.

Traditionally, these hand painted eggs were given as gifts for weddings, housewarming and births. They were displayed on pedestals and usually encased in glass. I did have this under a glass dome when I had my oriental collection displayed.
