Private William Scott, 3rd Vermont Infantry ( Union ) Born: c. 1839, Died: April 17, 1862.
In September 1861, Scott was court martialed for sleeping on guard duty and became the first Union soldier of the war sentenced to be executed.
President Abraham Lincoln, however, pardoned him.
In April 1862, Scott was mortally wounded in an assault near Yorktown. Known as the " Sleeping Sentinel," Scott is buried in grave 351 at the Yorktown National Cemetery.
