A crystal geode is a plain-looking rock on the outside. When you split it open, a hollow rock with a crystalline structure is inside. Geodes are used to decorate your home, although they also offer a glimpse into geological forces at work. Geodes range in size from rocks that fit in your hand to cavern - sized.

What Causes A Geode To Be Created ?

Geodes have two different processes that create the mineral structures inside the rocks. The first occurs in either volcanic or sub-volcanic areas. Gas bubbles called vesicles form, and minerals are deposited inside the bubbles. When the bubble cools down and hardens, the minerals are trapped inside. The

other process occurs when sedimentary concentrations dissolve in nodules. The nodules are then filled with other mineral deposits.

What Type of Minerals are Commonly Found in Geodes ?

The most common type of mineral that forms inside of a geode is crystal quartz. Depending on the minerals included, as well as impurities and access to heat, they also can contain amethyst, chalcedony, jasper, or dolomite. Some types of geodes have been heat treated or dyed to create different colors in the
rock.
