Not sure if it can be painted, though I wouldn't see why you can't. And yes, very much alive but didn't see comments until just now :)

Brown can definitely be painted white and any other color but you want to paint it white first. And if it's unopened, I don't think it matters how old it is. Especially if it's still soft.
