Description

The listing, Vintage Hand Painted Pepper Mill Grinder Czech? has ended.

Hi.

I thought of the Listia Nation when I bought this, purely to offer it up for you. Myself, I'm more of a mid-century modern type guy, and when it comes to pepper mills I'm a Dansk dude.

But this is sweet. And when I mention Czech I really have no clue, only the fact that it has a hand-painted floral motiff that is very Czech to me.

But my education is not in hand-painted pepper corn action.

So regardless of where it is made, it is made well. (and not mass made, either.)

Wood. Milled. Brass fittings. The grinder rocks and grinds up your favorite peppercorns. You could even grind salt if your into the Pink Himalyan stuff.

Very, very good condition. Stands 9"

For classification purposes I put this in the antique section b/c I believe the Listians in this segment would appreciate this item, although I know it is not 100 years old.

Cheers.

That's Tole painting. More than likely early New England or Pennsylvania Dutch. If it's a European influence, it would be more Scandinavian or northern German.

Thank you much for your lesson, much obliged! On a side note, would Pennsylvania Dutch not have European influence?

Wasn't being snarky. I guess growing up in Philly, not very far from Lancaster, PA where the majority of the Pennsylvania Dutch are, I just assume that people know that connection, because we always did. The Dutch part has nothing to do with Holland. It's a German word that was Americanized. I guess therein lies the confusion?

There we go! Yesterday I had been in forums and across the www where people were combating semantics, and I think yesterday I allowed my feelings to get involved with my reading of what you posted. You, having a much better knowledge of this topic than I, but it's like me expecting people to know everything about technology b/c I am in and around it, and grow up with it. +1 @starbabyOnline1 for helping me to learn. Cheers.

joshuamiles - As I said, Northern German. Pennsylvania Dutch are descendents of Germany.

I wasn't challenging you, and I'm an adroit reader of the written English language. Based on what you "said" your implications were a little vague, and my understanding (of the socio-cultural) nuances of pepper mills, let alone Pennsylvania Dutch by way of Germany are lacking. Good thing there is always an expert here on Listia.
