Iceberg lettuce is believed to be one of the first vegetables brought to the new world by explorer Christopher Columbus and has been grown in North America since colonial times.

Iceberg lettuce got its name from the fact that California growers shipped it on rail cars covered with heaps of crushed ice in the 1920s. It had previously been called Crisphead lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce is one of the most popular types of lettuce. It is sturdy with a large, firm head that looks like a small green cabbage. The rather think leaves are crispy and remain firm long after being picked.
