Yeah, you would run the line that was going from modem to computer into the router, normally there is writing over the port that says Modem or something similar. The other 4 ports you would run to anything that you wanted hooked up via ethernet, it's good to have at least 1 desktop hooked into it to access it easily to change your passkey or any other settings . And anything wireless of course needs the wireless adapter (which is a given i suppose lol), any even halfway recent laptop automatically has one built in, and adapters for desktop can be pretty cheap depending on where you go to buy them. That depends upon what you want or need. I had 2 computers hooked up to this router via ehternet, and two smart phones and my laptop via wireless. I'm not sure of your experience with devices, but a router is simply used to maintain internet access amongst many different devices both interchangeably hard wired(ethernet) as well as wireless via home network. I hope I have answered your question.
