The listing, Wedgwood Dye Ken John Peel Pottery Pitcher Hunting Scene Hound Handle PERFECT CONDITION has ended.
This "Dye Ken John Peel" Wedgwood pitcher is the very large 7-1/2" size (to the top of spout), 64oz. from the series. It was designed and named for John Peel, a huntsman, made famous as the subject of a popular old 19th century song with that title, which greatly romanticized the sport of foxhunting in England in the 1840's and 1850's.
The main design features raised hunt scenes. The handle is a hunting dog. This pitcher is in excellent condition. No chips, no cracks, no crazing and no repairs. The larger size, in this wonderful condition is a rarity.
My research tells me this design was actually issued by Wedgwood in the 1930's. It was one of the first designs produced at their new Barlaston factory which was built in 1938.
The misconception of this pitcher series being made in 1829, I believe, stems from the song, which is supposedly the year it was written. More confusing, the year 1829 appears as part of the mark on the bottom of the pitcher.
Getting back to the song, ""D'ye ken" means "do you know" in the dialects of Northern England (where John Peel lived) and in Scotland. I had put the words in the listing but went over the character count. I will add the song in an update.
Pretty cool, huh? You can see I read quite a lot about the making of this design. Basically, I thought it was from 1829, but as I read further I was confused. It was my own confusion that led me to research this further. I didn't want someone to get this and think it was from 1829.
I have learned so much from collecting, as I'm sure you have.
I am opening this bid at my normal 499. Let it be a real auction and let your bids determine its' worth. You have to love it, if even just for the dog handle. Honestly, that's what I fell in love with.
