Description

The listing, 25 Blue Star Sea Holly Seeds has ended.

Really fascinating color and form! Egg-shaped sea blue blossoms grow 24-30 in. tall. Dries beautifully for unique bouquets. Prefers full sun to partial shade. Zones: 4 - 8 (-20° F.) Height: 18 - 30 inches. Shade Requirement: Full sun. Tolerates light shade.

This sea holly is thistle-like in appearance and will grow up to 30 inches tall on stiff, blue stems. Egg-shaped, metallic-blue flower heads (2 inches long) are surrounded by a collar of 12 - 18 inches, attractive, somewhat soft-to-the-touch, finely-divided, blue-gray bracts which extend outward from the base of each flower head. All foliage has a bluish tinge with lower leaves being heart-shaped and spiny-toothed and upper leaves being palmately-divided. A long-lasting cut flower that also dries well.

Do these bloom from a spring planting? Are they apt to self-sow or escape from their bed? Do they hurt little children who would accidently fall into them?

Most perennials do better the second year after sowing from seed as far as blooming and bigger growth, the first year is put into growing. As far as seed scattering, if the seeds can be allowed to drop and fall all over the ground they will self sow themselves. I am not too sure if they are going to grow all the way across your yard, but that may be a possibility. I do know that these are a prickly plant, but not like a cactus, just rough and prickly. I can not tell you if they would hurt a child, but if in doubt I would steer away from them if you are concerned. :-)
