(IN PERFECT CONDITION.) Crisis point arrives in Englang's economic decline. Amidst growing unrest Nell Fairing and her family struggle to maintain their comfortable middle-class life. A series of violent confrontations produce an ultra-right-wing government and leave Nell to fend for herself in a country on the brink of civil war. Her desperate attempts to reach her parents and Wales bring her into contact with the neofacist authorities and the newly born resistance movement before she finds temporary refuge and brief love-affair among a group of refugees on an isolated farm. The political crisis is resolved but Nell is forced to reappraise her attitudes and expectations before she can begin to rebuild her life.
