This is a 16-17mm bronze coin issued by Claudius II, also known as Claudius Gothicus because of his victory over the Goths in the battle of Naissus. He was a very popular emperor, but died shortly after taking power in the Plague of Cyprian. He was emperor of Rome form 268-270.
The obverse depicts a right-facing Claudius wearing a radiate crown. The legend is DIVO CLAVDIO("Divine Claudius").
The reverse shows an altar with a flame on it. The legend is CONSECRATIO ("[The Emperor is] Consecrated").
-Amber Mazie Late era Roman Coins are the most common finds, and are sold in a variety of on-line locations. This coin is worth about a 10 - 20 US dollars however, it is a piece of history can you really put a price on that? I collect Roman artifacts myself. Just holding the artifacts sparks tactile emotions of days long since passed. Who held this coin? What was it used to purchase?
thanks for answering her question, Daniel. I get my coins from other dealers and online. What I love about collecting coins is exactly what Daniel was referring to, having the opportunity to own and hold a piece of history, literally!
Fanned and watching... very nice coin especially considering it is what, 1741-1743 years old?... that kinda boggles the mind to see, and get the opportunity to own, something that old... good luck on all your listings
thanks Tim! yes, that's what i love about collecting coins, "owning" a little piece of history, especially when it's ancient Roman because I'm Romanian and they are my ancestors.
I am glad to see someone willing to share a rare find like this you are a blessed person and I think this will make a collector very happy this has a lot of history in it and I found myself reading up on this one just see the story behind it and I would sugest anyone wanting to own this piece of history to give it a read very nice auction and very cool coin
