The listing, City of Fire Paperback has ended.
This is one of the earlier books on the development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos NM from 1943-45. And to its credit, one of the shorter ones. For a basic primer on the most significant scientific feat of the 20th century, it is wonderful. There are later books that are twice as long, and there are books about "atomic science" before Los Alamos and after World War II, but you might benefit from finding a copy of this one first. If you like this topic and this treatment of it, you'll want more information eventually. The jury is still out on whether dropping the bombs in Japan was a sad but overdue end to the Japanese aggression, or an overreaction and unneeded act of revenge against an enemy who could not have held out much longer anyway. The scary part is that so many other nations now have this technology and the bombs they can build are many times more powerful than the two that Los Alamos delivered to the Pacific Theater.
