Great for Homeschooling children on how to effectively read.
This anthology makes perfect October reading for middle school, as well as for "kids" of all ages. Editor Robert Potter has chosen 18 tales to adapt/abridge-stories which will captivate, mystify and challenge readers' sense of the natural world and "scientific" method. Each story (3 to 10 pages in length) is preceded by an introductory teaser and a short list of vocabulary words which will appear in the selection. Additionally each tale is followed by questions which check reading comprehension and stimulate both creative and analytical thought. Readers gain insight and a better understanding of these tales (and the short story lgenre in general) thanks to Potter's editorial input.
Part One (Exploring the Unknown) consists of 8 stories, including three examples of international folklore and Poe's Tell Tale Heart. Part Two (a Sci Fi Sampler) contains 6 tales mostly set on earth, including ones by H.G. Wells and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Part Three (Strange but...True?) presents 4 reporter-style accounts of unexplained phenomena, set in India, England, Canada and Massachusetts. This anthology is great for the classroom or a cozy armchair by the hearth. Read and Believe-if you
dare!
