50th Anniversary First Supersonic Flight Issue
The Postal Service issued a 32-cent First Supersonic Flight 1947 commemorative stamp on October 14, 1997, at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
The stamp features a side view an X1 aircraft as it hits Mach 1, the speed of sound. The issuance of the stamp marked the 50th anniversary of the breaking of the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, by American pilot Chuck Yeager.
Designed by Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia, and illustrated by Paul Salmon of Burke, Virginia, the stamp was issued in a self-adhesive pane of twenty, and printed by the Banknote Corporation of America, Inc. in the offset process.
