Paracord was developed for use in the suspension lines of US parachutes during World War II. It's a lightweight, nylon cord which will not rot or mildew. Paracord is used as a general purpose utility cord by both the military and civilians. Type III or 550 paracord, is composed of seven two ply yarns with a sheath composed of 32 woven strands. The braided outer sheath has a tensile strength rated at about 200 pounds. The 7 inner strands have a tensile strength rated at about 50 pounds each.

In survival situations a paracord bracelet can be unwoven and used for all kinds of things including, lashing for a shelter/raft, sewing clothing, fire bows, tourniquets, splints, fishing line, animal snares, tying up gear, and many other uses.
