closure is a snap frame. that way the entire purse opens, then snaps shut.

there's one photo that shows it completely open. there are hinges on the frame which allow it to open & close.

No cracks...what you see are shirred, gathered folds of leather.The metal framework is covered by the leather which is soft enough to be gathered into soft pleated or shirring--like a curtain over a curtain rod.
