they are full sun,well drained soil or sandy soil , i have a tree 18' high, they can be kept smaller by trimming them in the fall.. they would rather be dry than too wet. they go dormant in winter and look like dead sticks, but are well worth those few months of being 'dead looking" once they start blooming... :)

i cannot say for sure---- i have a dog, my daughter has 3, none of them have ever bothered the trees, nor the seedlings.. but i would think if they were harmful to animals over the years i would have seen warnings somewhere........
