Winner will get 50 + red hopi dye amaranth seeds!!
Get these while its still Spring :)

These are freshly (2014 fall) picked seeds from my yard.
Here are just some facts, uses and planting instructions for your convenience :

This burgundy-red amaranth is heat and drought tolerate (like all amaranths) making it a great choice for sowing in the summer. Add to baby lettuce with other heat tolerate greens for a great mix. This amaranth will grow very tall and produce long, plumed seed heads. The dark seeds are edible and nutritious as well. The "dye" in the name refernces this plants use as a food dye. Used by the Hopis to color piki bread.

CULINARY & HEALTH INFO: Amaranth is 18 percent protein and full of Vitamin E, fiber, iron and various amino acids. It is also extremely digestible. So versatile -- the leaves can be eaten like spinach and the seeds like grain for cooked cereal or pop them like popcorn, or roast them or sprout them! The seeds can be used as a "meal" for making traditional dishes, including beverages!

Very easy to grow. Direct sow in the late spring after threat of frost has passed in a sunny, well-drained spot. Sow at 1-2 inches apart for micro and baby greens, and/or thin seedlings to 6-10 inches apart for larger, mature plants. Amaranth tolerates fair fertility and dry conditions, but more fertility and moderate water will yield lush and tall plants. Plant height varies with the amount of fertility in the soil, but this variety can reach 36 inches high.
