1978 S Choice Proof Deep Cameo Jefferson Nickel
You are looking at a Jefferson nickel. Despite its name, the primary metal used in its composition is actually copper, not nickel (at a ratio of 75% copper and 25% nickel).
In 1942 the use of nickel in the manufacture of coins was suspended due to wartime demand of the metal. So instead nickels dated 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945 were made of a silver alloy containing 35% silver. To distinguish them from the copper-nickel coins new large mintmarks were used and were placed centered above the Monticello on the reverse. Also the P mintmark (for Philadelphia) was used for the first time.
