My mother's "story" took place in Evanston, Il, so not any way near as harsh. Both the parents were very, very good to my mom and dad.

I understand your story.I would guess the first Alice's name was taken from an older person. IN 1910, Alice was in the top ten girl names. Now it is coming back and is about 106th most popular.
