Sage has one of the longest histories of use of any culinary or medicinal herb. Ancient Egyptians used it as a fertility drug. In the first century C.E. Greek physicians used an aqueous decoction of sage to stop bleeding wounds and to clean ulcers and sores.
It was used by herbalist to externally treat sprains, swelling, ulcers and bleeding. Internally, a tea made from sage leaves has had a long history of use to treat sore throats and coughs; often by gargling. Also used for Rheumatism, heavy menstrual bleeding and to dry up a mothers milk. It was particularly noted to strengthen the nervous system, improve the memory, and sharpen the senses.
