The listing, Circa 50s COCA◆COLA Wall Mount Bottle Opener & Box has ended.
Yes kids, there WAS a time when bottles of soda (pop) did NoT twist off! Thus, the trusty 'ol bottle opener!
The STAR "X" opener seen here, was submitted for U.S. patent, February 9, 1942, and became U.S. Patent 2,333,088, on November 2, 1943. This particular opener was the First of those produced in West Germany after World War II, as designated by the "1" and "W GERMANY" on the back face. (West Germany came into "existence" in 1945.)
Contrary to some writings, which date these as 1970+, the rebuilding of Western Germany was vital and important to the "Free world", and many industries and trades established for the rebuilding of the nation. (Also, there are later markings on these which show different production eras such as the "7" with the full "WEST GERMANY" mark which I have seen, but this was definitely the first production of these.)
The mount/catcher itself was a provision of the Coca Cola Company and distributed to such places as cafes/diners. In other places, just the opener was provided. This particular one was evidently placed in the kitchen area, as the wood has been darkened by the heat on the left base of the catch box. In later years, the boxes changed as well.
Well gang, I guess that's it for now!
Ya know, some folks don't have a smile, so how about sharing one of yours?!
Or like the commercials used to say....
"Share a Coke and a smile!"
