It can take NiMH batteries and I believe each port is independent so you can mix all types of batteries

You CAN charge normal batteries if you want but the chance of blowing up your house is pretty high :). You can google the model number and find out exactly what type of batteries you can recharge but I am pretty sure if it can be recharged at all, this will do it with no problems
