Stone carvings of this style of axe have been found along with carvings of the bull in the Neolithic town of Catal Hoyuk dating from 7500 B.C. Similar symbols have been found on plates in Ancient Romania. This symbolism must have spread to the later Ancient Greek cultures as the 2 bladed axe accompanies the bull in artwork found throughout the Ancient Greek culture. Eventually the double-axe accompanies the Storm God Zeus. In Ancient Crete, the symbol of the double-axe always accompanies goddesses, and it seems that it was the symbol of the beginning of the creation. Of all the Minoan religious symbols, the axe was the holiest. In some interpretations, it a symbol of matriarchy. It may also be interpreted as a butterfly based on the Minoan butterfly goddesses shown in the shape of a the double-axe. In other areas the double-bladed axe stood for the Amazons and their Goddess under several of Her names: Artemis, Gaea, Rhea, and Demeter. The priests at the Ancient Oracle Delphi were called the men of the double axe. In the Near East and other parts of the region, eventually axes of this sort are often wielded by male divinities and appear to become symbols of the thunderbolt and part of its symbolism was later transferred to the Nordic god Thor. The magical meanings of the Double Bladed Axe are: Increase, protection, will power, magical power under control.
The two heads symbolize the waxing and waning Moons.
