It's used for reading a hard drive. If you took the hard drive out of a desktop you could put it in the reader and connect to your laptop and be able to access everything on the hard drive.

So it's not so much a 'reader' as it it is a external case for 3.5" SATA I/II/III drives.

Does it connect to the computer via USB, or e-SATA?

And does it does it require a power supply, does it come with its own, or does it get its power from the computer?

It looks like pic #2 caught the edge of a USB B type plug.
