I have been to see a Broadway touring company production of this story on two occasions. Both were tremendous. My internal environmentalist really adored this new take on the "Wicked" Witch of the East. My daughter and both granddaughters read the series of novels by George McGuire, from which the musical was adapted. I highly recommend them. They are available through most county libraries and for relatively cheap at thriftbooks.com.
As far as your title indicating that "Wicked" is the longest running play, I thought it was A Chorus Line, but I was wrong. I looked it up. It seems WIkipedia has the longest running Broadway show as The Phantom of the Opera (and still running). Here is a link, if you would like to see where your favorites fit in.

Mousetrap (Agatha Christie's play) is the longest continuously running show worldwide, as it has played in the West End Theatre in London for about 25,000 shows.
