Description

The listing, Unknown gold rush piece? has ended.

What I have here is what I believe to be a gold stake claim tag. Used to mark where the beginning of someone's claim started. I am not 100% sure. I have taken this to several coin shops and even posted this on Cointalk. Which is an online group of coin collectors of all levels and ages. Very certain it is not gold itself but I did have one collector say it may been dipped in gold a long time ago as a way to distinguish the color of that gold claim. Again this is all speculation. Please feel free to ask any questions and check out my other auctions.

awesome stake/claim tag! I heard that too, that claim tags are sometimes dipped in or hammered with the clink from the melting process of the gold..
but using these tags to mark the beginning or end of the claim area wouldn't be wise, I'm told that the prospector would simply have one on him if questioned by the assayer or the law.... some tags where used by bankers and assayers to store & identify the exchanged gold... some history of the Dutchman's gold was researched by use of such a tag found in a old bank vault... the mine has still not been found.

Thanks for all the info Patrick! And that does make a lot of sense that it would be for the bank use and not to mark the stake. Wouldn't want nosey neighbors to go trying to dig up your gold

yea, its more common back in those days to mark the claim boundaries with lead.. usually propelled by a colt...... quite effective against nosy neighbors

Oh wow! Didn't know that. Lol. But yes I suppose that's way more effective
