I have done a Jumbo skein of red heart yarn + 2 3oz skeins (ends tied together) to make one cake and I think I could have gotten more in the cake but that was all I needed for my project. This thing is a work horse for sure.
I have only had mine for just shy of 6 months and have only used it 6 time, but I can say I haven't had a problem with the yarn winder as of yet. I do suggest you play with your hand tension on your yarn to see what works best for you because that will make a difference in your cakes.
I went so far as to make a mark with tape on the table I use to make sure I have the yarn in the right position for the winder.
