Description

The listing, Antique Copper Cauldren Highly Etched Unknown Origin has ended.

hello and welcome to this free listing. this is most likely the single most amzing item i have listed to date and i have been busy here since i joined. what you are looking at is a antique copper cauldren that has been what i call highly decorated in the sense that it is highly etched in, i have looked other ones similiar to it and found a few literraly just a few that had etching on them, of those i did see they was nothing like this. it is etched from top to bottom and all the way around. it has a solid copper thick handle. now the colors on it elude me as to what coat is what on it. its solid copper you can see it clear in and outside of it. please see pictures i took full view 360 degree view if you go from pic to pic. but inside over the copper it has some type of silver looking coating, maybe like a lead color? under that you can see also in the pic its all copper under that coating. the outside is again strange and i am not exactly for sure the coatings over the copper. parts of it look like a shiny silver color, while other parts have like a metallic copper look. again please see all the photos, i am stressing this because the photos came out about right on color giving the fact all cameras can hide or not show colors perfectly. i am also at a loss as to where it comes from or what the designs on it are? the bottom is kinda bubbled, please see side bottom views. no gin because i have no idea where to set it at fairly to me since i have never been able to find another like it exactly. oh, the only thing that a magnet sticks to on it is the 2 steel hoops that hold the handle. they are steal horseshoe shaped and look to have copper rivets in it. you know what i am going to say! :-) yep :-) see the photos listed its there crystal clear. thanks folk for stopping by my listing. most importantly thanks for using listia folks, you all make this possible!! any question please ask. thank you :-)

i would say by looking at it, that if i had to take a gallon of milk full and put it in there, i believe it would hold the full gallon. but i dont see it holding much more than that. the height i measured and its 6 inches from bottom to top lip, and 7 inches to the top of the handle hooks. the steel ones. and thank you for your comment, and good luck! :-)

hi. no it does not have any marks i can see? just all the etching stuff around it. as far as art deco i do not know. i do know when i picked this up it had black soot all over the bottom like someone used it over a camp fire. i cleaned it up at one point with never dull.

How fun to find something so raw and organic! I'm not sure if it's copper with patina, or copper plated, but if it were not pure copper..then the metal would have to be one that's also malleable like pure copper is. I have seen marks, or hieroglyphics like this similar to Central America or even on a Spanish Pottery Vase I have. I came across a pictionary of sorts, that helps define symbol meanings, but the words can change meaning in context with how they are used in a sentence..it is the same for these symbolic etches. I think researching those might help originate this, treasure or artifact you have here,.. and I imagine it will tell you of it's purpose and may help lead you to a tribe where they made similar vessels. I think it's not only artsy, but it may also hold an important historical value. You can open an account at Collector's Weekly, and ask them to help you figure it out. I've had some rare finds before and I'm still perplexed on one of mine. It's great that your willing to share yours. Hopefully, we can figure it out by the end of auction. Im totally intrigued already. I like it very much. Watching, and hope to bid later too.

thank you for the great comments! i wish i did know? i think you are right, the symbols on this are the key to unlocking where it originated and more of an exact age on it. sounds like an awesome book you have. like i said i just honestly do not know, just know its old and what i described. i was thinking about it more and i bought this in vinton iowa at a garage sale one day happen to drive by. there was a older teenager with a yard full of nice stuff and when we spoke with her she had mentioned she was selling these items she had for her grandmother and she was into antiques. there was quite a bit there i seen a lot pricey but worth it obviously. this costed me exactly 12 dollars. but it did not look like this when i got it, was very tarnished and black totally on the bottom, could not tell it was copper. rest i described here. i would be interested in learning more, let me know if you do find out, i think a lot of us are interested in its origins including me. but i agree really unique. thanks again i loved the great comments you left :-)

well in fairness i did not add it to the listing, but at the same note, i hope someone wins it for a good price here at listia! wether i make a few points or alot, no matter, just want happy customers!! and i figure just because its not the exact typed item i normally collect on my own, i would let it go where it can be cherished and loved, if nothing else if the winner resales it i hope they make out great on it. it truly is a really unique and interesting item. thank you for using listia everyone! its what makes this all possible :-) and thank you personally for the wonderful comments about it :-)

yes i too seen some around online, several like this almost but no markings and handles i noticed varied from vessel to vessel. the couple i found like this that did have etching on them was no where etched like this one is. i seen one was etched like all the way around the bottom only, and the second one i could find had some designed etching just through the middle section of it. this one is up down and all around it. so i would agree it is really unique and fairly rare in my opinion. but thanks for the great comment you left :-)
