It doesn't have any noticable odor, but like I said throw it under water, and throw out the box.

I hate fish,they to me are the hardest animal to take care of. But I want to get my son a couple for Christmas.

I would suggest you start with a smaller tank, and something like goldfish, or guppies, as they are pretty easy, and skip this particular filter as it would be to big.
