AUTHENTIC ROMAN COIN

This is a beautiful follis minted to commemorate the founding of Constantinople. The victory on a prow type alludes to the naval victory of Crispus and his subsequent capture of Byzantium (soon to be re-named Constantinople). It was struck between 336 - 337 AD at the mint in Thessalonica.

The obverse of the coin has the image of the laureate, helmeted bust of Constantinople left in imperial mantle, sceptre over left shoulder. The legend is CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS

The reverse shows Victory standing on prow, head left, sceptre in right hand, left hand on shield

Mintmark SMTSE

Reference RIC VII Thessalonica 230 E

Roman coins are available at reasonable prices because many are being found in hoards by individuals in Eastern Europe.
