Growing Strawflower's

Strawflowers are a gorgeous addition to any garden. They are most typically used in dried flower arrangements, but many people love to grow them in their garden mixed with a variety of other plants. The strawflower grows very high (it can get anywhere from one to four feet high!) and is an annual. Typically blooms of red, yellow, pink, white, and orange will abound. When growing strawflower, look for seedlings that are stocky with very little blooms and a lot of leaves. You want to choose these because the plant will then devote its energy to growing strong, solid roots instead of focusing everything on the flowers. Once the plant becomes firmly planted, the blooms will then appear. Strawflower likes alkaline soil that is slightly dry. If you’re not sure what type of soil you have in your garden, you may want to get a PH test just to be sure. They also enjoy almost sandy-like soil that is well drained, so you may want to mix a little bit of sand with your growing soil.

The strawflower should be planted in spring in a bed that has already been prepared. Be sure there is no danger of any frost before planting them. The plants should be planted about 6-8 inches apart, and enjoy being planted in groups of about three per bunch. Once the flowers bloom, they should be trimmed regularly to promote even fuller, longer blooming. When the plant gets about two feet high, using a stake is an excellent idea so that they grow straight and strong. While many people love to use strawflower in dried arrangements, they also make a lovely addition to fresh bouquets and table decorations. Adding them to wreaths is also a popular way to display their colorful flowers and they make a bold statement while adding a delicate touch.
